Today, the adventure takes us to Central Africa, more specifically to Congo, a country full of natural wonders, where the mighty Congo River flows, the second largest in the world in terms of water volume, second only to our Amazon.
Congo, officially the Democratic Republic of Congo, has a history marked by many conflicts, but also by great resilience. Its attractions include the capital Kinshasa, a vibrant and lively city; the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, habitat of Grauer's gorilla; the city of Goma, in the east of the country, known for its beautiful views of Lake Kivu; the Salonga rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and finally, the powerful Inga waterfall, part of the Congo River.
Congo's currency is the Congolese franc, and the official language is French. Oh, and we Brazilians need a visa to visit the country.
Although Congo is blessed with abundant natural resources, including copper, diamonds, gold and coltan (a vital mineral for electronic devices), it suffers from political instability, insufficient infrastructure and corruption. However, despite these challenges, the Congolese people are known for their hospitality and joy in life. In fact, let's not romanticize, we entered Congo at the Cabinda border and saw the suffering of the people up close, of course we were right on the outskirts of the country, but Congo is certainly not a country prepared for tourism at the time we visited (2019 ).
Now, let's get to our curiosity! The Congo River, in addition to being the second largest in the world in terms of water volume, is the only one to cross the equator twice, creating a unique and impressive biodiversity. It is the country's lifeblood, providing food, water and transportation for millions of people.
