PORTUGAL | WHAT TO DO IN PORTO?

Porto is a historic city that has also been named one of the best cities in the world to visit several times. And rightly so, Porto is a bustling city that offers a mix of new and old. The city is full of old buildings with spectacular architecture, and there are always things to do in Porto.

Nightlife is also known with many bars and clubs. There is also a wide range of cozy restaurants and cafes.

We arrived in Porto after three days of rest in Milan, where we did some sightseeing with our missionary friends Bruno and Paty. Below are some tips on what to do in Porto.

WATERFRONT

An old but lively neighborhood that crosses the Douro River. The area is characterized by its narrow houses in cheerful colors, small alleys and all the cozy cafes and restaurants. This is also where you'll find several of the city's wineries and manufacturers.

Zona Ribeirinha is full of people both during the day and at night, perfect for people watching or a romantic dinner overlooking the river.

Along the seafront, there are also several stalls selling handicrafts and souvenirs.

VILA NOVA DE GAIA

You could say this is a city within a city, as they are connected via the famous Ponte D. Luis I bridge.

In Roman times, the town was known as Cale Gale and originates from a Celtic settlement, possibly even from the Stone Age. When you pass over the bridge, you can see the Serra do Pilar Monastery at the top of the hill.

D. LUIS I BRIDGE

A bridge that has become a classic landmark in Porto, offering a beautiful view and spectacular architecture. The bridge and the surrounding area is a true photographer's dream location.

The bridge takes you to the other side of the city, to Vila Nova de Gaia and it is possible to walk or take the metro across the bridge, even cars are allowed on the ground level of the bridge.

The walk is accessible both at the top of the bridge and at ground level.

TRY THE LOCAL FRANCESINHA DISH

Greasy, delicious, impressive and above all incredibly satisfying is a very good description of the local dish Francesinha. It's available almost everywhere, but it's best to go to a place that specializes in Francesinha. There are different variations, but most contain bread, sausage, ham and lots of cheese.

You also get fries and a tomato sauce.

PORTO CATHEDRAL

Porto Cathedral offers magnificent architecture, and the interior is full of beautiful ornaments and precious relics. The cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Porto and originates from the 1200s. However, it was not until the 16th century that it obtained its current appearance.

The building looks more like a fortress than a church, and from here you also have a beautiful view of the city.

Of course, you can't miss the cod cake and the pastelzinho de belém that you can easily find on any corner.
