New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world, where most people spend their budget on a wide range of exciting activities, from bungy jumping to skydiving and rafting. There are a million activities to choose from: you can skydive basically anywhere; Queenstown is home to shotover jets (rocket like boats that zip across shallow rivers), ziplines and bungy jumps; and there's caving, zorbing, transalpine hiking, paragliding and more. If it can be done outdoors, it can be done in New Zealand. So, when you go (I say “when” not “if”, because this country is so amazing it 100% should be on your list, and if not, we will find you and drag you there!),
Before you travel: you didn't forget about travel insurance, right?
If you're so anxious that you forgot to take out travel insurance , don't worry, there's still time! Travel insurance , although not mandatory for entry into American soil, can be your best friend. This is because any medical care or emergency, no matter how simple it may be, has very high costs in the land of Uncle Sam. Insurance with good coverage prevents a huge headache (not to mention in your pocket) and also gives you that hand in case your suitcase being lost, for example. We suggest that you take out insurance that covers any type of incident on the spot! We at Ideias na Mala recommend and do not travel without insurance from Seguros Promo , a Brazilian company that works as an insurance comparator, seeking the best cost-benefits on the market without giving up excellent coverage! Definitely one of the coolest things we did in New Zealand was the Waitomo worm cave which is hyped and touristy but still amazing. You walk or climb down in the darkness and float down the (very cold) river while looking at the caves covered in “lights”. It's like looking at stars, but they are actually fungus gnats or fireflies that glow due to a chemical reaction. Absolutely stunning and cool. We found the three-hour trip long enough, but if you enjoy rappelling, you should consider the five-hour version. This experience is one of our most lasting memories from my trip.
A significant advantage of the North Island is its climate. New Zealand in general is wild, vast, rugged and geologically volatile – the Iceland of the Southern Hemisphere, so to speak – so don't expect the Mediterranean. But in the far north, you'll find the Bay of Islands, where seabirds and dolphins soar in crystal-clear waters and secluded beaches are easily accessible. This subtropical zone is known as the “winterless north,” which may be a bit generous.
For geothermal activities, the North Island has the game figured out. There are 22 volcanoes in the Auckland area, which gives you an idea of what kind of land this country is built on.
When is the best time to visit New Zealand? Technically, there is NEVER bad weather to go to New Zealand; however, because the North and South Islands are long and narrow, the climate is not uniform. But as an overview, below are the New Zealand seasons:
Summer: (December to February) This is the most popular time; Therefore the busiest - but the beaches are great during this time of year. Take note that January will be the hottest month. With that in mind, New Zealand is a great escape for these months of the year, if you want to escape the harsh winters.
Autumn: (March to May) This time is beautiful how the leaves change color and it's also one of the best times to plan a getaway or a hiking spree since the summer crowds are all but gone. To add, rates are at an "off-peak" level.
Winter: (June to August) Queenstown, for example, will be your winter wonderland, but there are certainly several ski areas across the country. If you come in June, you can enjoy the Queenstown Winter Festival.
Spring: (September to November) This is one of the off-peak seasons, as you can enjoy warmer days and longer hours of daylight.
