We flew to Morocco from Madrid - a very cheap flight - but almost immediately felt as if we had arrived in a completely new world. It was our second trip to North Africa, Marrakech was overwhelming at first. Within minutes I was lost in the Marrakesh medina and the sounds and smells enveloped me. When we finally found our hotel, we tried to make up for the lack of planning and put together a list of what we wanted to see in the city before I had to move on.
Marrakech is a city that takes away all your sense of direction and everywhere you look there is a kaleidoscope of color. There are so many things to do in Marrakech, it's a veritable flurry of activity, but it's also easy to relax and watch it all happen in the city's many shaded oases.
Here are 5 things not to miss...
1. Henna and Harira: go with the flow at Djemaa el Fna
2. Pass the path through the souks
3. Bathe in a Hammam
4. Majorelle Garden
5. Bahia Palace
Morocco caught us off guard with the elegant city of Marrakesh and its strong vitality. However, Ait Ben haddou impressed us more in his own way. Ait Benhaddou, located in southeastern Morocco, has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1987, the same year The Living Daylights was filmed there. The village was also the setting for famous films such as Prince of Persia, Star Wars and Gladiator and the series Game of Thrones.
We visited the kasbha Ait Ben Haddou and Talout for a day trip by car. About 30 km from Ouarzazate, Ait Benhaddou, nestled in the High Atlas Mountains, is one of the most attractive places in Morocco. The village enchants international visitors with buildings following a special style called Ksar. Ksar refers to a group of houses made from the ground and surrounded by high walls, which is considered the traditional living space of local inhabitants in the Sahara Desert.
Climbing the Atlas Mountains really pleased us, we saw snow, and took surreal photos, on the night return, we saw one of the most starry skies of our lives.
The houses are not extremely sophisticated, but the upper floors are adorned with ornate patterns. Furthermore, a tower is built at each corner of the wall by bricks and mud in a traditional way. The more sophisticated the towers, the richer the owner. Many towers are so ornate that they look like crowns. However, as they were all made from soil, after years they age and crumble due to time.
