MALVINES | WHAT TO DO IN THE FALKLANDS?

The Falkland Islands are a territory of England, little visited due to having only three weekly flights, two military flights from the United Kingdom and one commercial flight from Chile on Saturdays. In addition to planes, from November to March some expeditions that go to Antarctica stop in the Falklands on the way back, and this was our case. Welcome to the Falkland Islands! Total population: 1800 people, 500,000 sheep and 500,000 penguins!

We arrived in the Falkland Islands on time and bidding started earlier than expected. We were on land by 7am and met a Brazilian couple who gave us the tip not to pay 100 dollars to see penguins, but to walk 5km in the freezing wind to see them. Once there, there were hundreds and hundreds of penguins, many of them still with their cute brown chicks. There were dolphins on the beach areas and smaller groups of penguins that walked to the beach and ended up going into the water. We spent approximately 2 hours there and then we looked for a car to take us back since we were very tired.

On the way back we stopped at a traditional English restaurant and ordered traditional British fish and chips. Many don't know, but the Falklands are one of the least visited territories in the world. Its terrible relationship with Argentina (due to the 1982 war) only makes it difficult to go to the small island of great beauty and full of penguins!

Our time there made us wonder what it's like to live isolated from the world with 1,800 other people?

During the Falklands War, Argentina and the United Kingdom fought over these islands, along with South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Britain regained control over the Falklands when the 74-day conflict ended in June 1982. Argentina still believes it has a sovereign claim to the islands and considers the British to be illegal occupiers.

The impact of the Falklands War can still be felt. Several designated areas on the islands are marked as active minefields and have been fenced off to keep people out. England regularly sends its special forces and units to work on demining the areas, but there are still a large number of mines. Interesting that there were groups of black people working on the island, later discovering that England hired black people from Zimbabwe to demine the island, as they are experts. We thought to ourselves: to remove mines, the USA and the United Kingdom do not send their experts. The last human death from explosion there was 4 years ago, but penguins and sheep keep stepping in the wrong place and blowing themselves up.

In recent years, it has been estimated that around 60 billion barrels of oil lie on the seabed around the Falkland Islands! Oil and gas companies are currently investigating natural resource potential offshore, but ongoing tension between Argentina and the United Kingdom has slowed and complicated progress.

Imagine a place that is so far off the beaten path, that you have miles of stunning scenery, beaches and magnificent bird life all to yourself. Imagine a silence that is only broken by the calls of birds and your own footsteps as you explore these beautiful islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.

These are the Falkland Islands or Malvinas for Argentines, one of the last great desert destinations, where your trip becomes an adventure. The walks will take you to islands full of penguins, albatrosses and petrels that are just there for you to discover and enjoy.

To travel in and out of the Falkland Islands, residents have to fly to Santiago, Chile and take a connecting flight to England, or fly out of Stanley direct to England via the Royal Air Force. British military planes can be booked by passengers, but tickets are ridiculously expensive. Argentina has the closest international airport to the Falkland Islands, but any flight service to Argentina was discontinued after the 1982 conflict.
