Hong Kong is the most vertical city in the world, with two hundred and ninety-three buildings taller than fifteen feet - sixty more than second-place New York City. Here are our tips on how to make the most of this remarkable destination.
We came to HongKong from Osaka in Japan via low cost Peartree, paying R$180 per person, and then we spent three days in this incredible destination.
What to do?
Victoria Peak is one of the most popular attractions in Hong Kong. It's the highest point on Hong Kong Island, which means the view is spectacular! There are several different lookout points on the Peak: the Sky Terrace at the Peak Tower (you'll need to pay an entrance fee unless you buy a combination ticket on the Peak Tram), the free viewing platform at the Peak Galleria, and Lion's Pavilion on the right from Peak Tower.
The Tian Tan Buddha is located on Lantau Island and was completed after 12 years of construction in 1993. The bronze Buddha draws pilgrims from all over Asia and there are 268 steps leading up to the statue. Across from Tian Tan Buddha is Po Lin Monastery, home to many devout monks!
In addition to the famous tours, we recommend taking a night out in Soho, having a 1-hour massage (R$90), and trying Chinese cuisine.
Quick tips for your first trip to Hong Kong
The local currency is the Hong Kong dollar. Most places accept Visa or Mastercard, and I would say 40-50% of places will also accept American Express. There are tons of ATM machines around Hong Kong, just make sure you have international withdrawal enabled.
Hong Kong has 4 seasons! It is not a year-round tropical country as many people seem to believe. Summers are hot and it gets quite cold during the winter months (December to February). The best time to visit is March to early June and September to November (but avoid the 1st week of October).
The main language spoken in Hong Kong is Cantonese, a local dialect. Many people speak English (or at least basic English), and almost all signs are bilingual.
Public transport is efficient, cheap and clean, and the network is very extensive. Taxis are also cheap if you are in a hurry.
The best way to get to and from the airport is via the Airport Express train. Tickets can be purchased at the station and train stops in Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island - it only takes 24 minutes end to end!
Most visitors choose to book hotels on Hong Kong Island or the Kowloon side. Search for hotels in Wan Chai, Central, Soho, Sheung Wan and Causeway Bay for maximum convenience! We stayed in Soho!
