FROM TALLINN TO HELSINKI - A DAY TRIP
When we visited Tallinn in March, we also decided to spend a day in Helsinki. A day trip from Tallinn to Helsinki is a great idea as it is so easy to get from one place to the next.
HOW TO GET FROM TALLINN TO HELSINKI OR HOW TO GET FROM HELSINKI TO TALLINN
The best way to get from Tallinn to Helsinki (or vice versa) is to take a ferry.
HOW TO GET TO TALLINN PORT - HOW TO GET TO HELSINK PORT
It takes about 10 minutes by bus from Tallinn Old Town to Tallinn Port. About 15 minutes from Helsinki harbor to Helsinki city center by tram.
For the ferry ride you can check in online or at the terminal. You definitely need to have your passport on hand. We got tickets in advance and I checked a few hours before departure.
FERRY RIDE TO HELSINKI
Taking a ferry with Estonian Transport Line Tallink from Tallinn to Helsinki was a perfect choice for us as it combines these two things.
The ferry is a luxury, it feels like a cruise. There is also free and fast wifi, newspapers and magazines and clean bathrooms.
Tallink recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before departure. It really makes sense, because after "check-in" you still have to walk a lot before reaching the ferry.
Most people think we were crazy when we announced that we would visit Helsinki in winter. If you're wondering what to do in Helsinki in winter, this is the post for you - we'll reveal 6 amazing things to do in and around Helsinki, and great place to stay in the city without breaking your budget!
In winter, the atmosphere around Helsinki is so magical. The long Nordic days of summer become very short as the sun only rises above the horizon for a few hours each day. Yes, it may be cold, but the city is bathed in the blue light of the magical "blue hour" between dusk and night. The sea freezes and the city is covered in snow, making it look like a fairy tale.
If you visit Finland during the winter season, you might be surprised to find blini on the menu. Blini are a version of pancakes originating in Russia. They are thick and fluffy, smaller than usual pancakes and traditionally served with fish roe and sour cream.
Blini are offered during the dark winter period, especially in January, to give a festive atmosphere to the start of the year – they are soft and buttery, and have traditionally served as a starter. Blini became popular in the 1990s - no one really knows why, but does it matter? They are delicious!
We had about 10 hours in Helsinki and lots of ideas about what to do. This day was planned, so I started our Helsinki trip in the city center. To be more precise, we started at the train station, which has become quite attractive in Helsinki.
What to do in Helsinki in winter:
1 Market Square Helsinki: Kauppatori
2 Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral
3 Helsinki Senate Square
4 Lutheran Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko)
5 Kiasma
6 Esplanade
7 Parliament
8 Temppeliaukio Church
9 Rautatientori Metro Station
10 Helsinki Station Square
Also, visit the children's history museum near the old port, we think it's one of the most incredible things we've ever seen in our lives!
We also saw many mothers having lunch and leaving their prams outside the restaurant or museum, we almost died of pity, but they seemed to be warmer than us.
Enjoy Finland, it is beautiful and glamorous!
