We flew to Cabinda airport on the 45 minute flight on TAAG Angola Airlines very early in the morning. We booked with a driver, who was excellent and literally showed me everything in the Cabinda enclave. The main attractions are the church and the large statue of Pope John Paul II along the beach. Although quite pleasant, once you leave the city and head north, it becomes much more pleasant in the cute, nature-filled smaller towns.
Leaving the city of Cabinda and heading north along the paved road, you notice that on the left hand side there is a constant and very long barbed wire fence, right at the exit of the highway, blocking access to the coast. This is what we call Chevron land. Chevron owns Cabinda, which has the richest oil deposits in Africa. Basically, a third of the entire enclave is fenced. This is good and bad, obviously. It's bad because it's another example of the west exploiting Africa, but it's good because it provides employment to many locals who would otherwise be working menial jobs in agriculture.
