We were heading from Macedonia to Serbia and decided to stop for a day in this beautiful and cold city.
The rock capital of Bulgaria! In addition to low prices, there are lots of cool things to do in Sofia and the tours you can join are anything but boring and, for the most part, completely free - or do you know of any free food tours in the world? Use this guide to make the most of your time!
What to do in Sofia?
a) Streetart
... can be found everywhere in the city - check Tsar Ivan Shishman Street to see graffiti, paste-ups and most importantly: the colorful transformer boxes!
b) Churches and monumental buildings The city is great to discover on foot, as it is not very big. The most important and most impressive buildings are the Alexander Nevski cathedral (the city's landmark) and we attended an Orthodox baptism here, crazy!, the Russian church , the church of St. George , the beautiful national theater "Ivan Vazov" , the Sveta Sofia chruch , the monumental Largo complex , the national palace of culture and the Narodno Sabranie - the parliament of Bulgaria. If you want to know more about the history of the buildings and the city, you should go on one of the great tours mentioned in part 2!
c) Relaxation in parks Sofia is a very green capital where you can find many nice parks. The biggest and possibly the most beautiful in the center is "Borisova gradina" - there you can even find a small lake, many statues of famous Bulgarians and the city's 2 big stadiums.
d) Vitosha Mountain The Vitosha mountain massif is located on the outskirts of Sofia and offers possibilities for hiking, climbing, mountain biking, winter sports with a great view (it is more than 2000m above sea level!). With this Sofia is the only capital in Europe that has such a tall mountain in its backyard! If you want to experience the life and spirit of the city, you should sit in one of the many Cafés in the center, stand back and people watch - if it's hot you should go to Vitosha Boulevard where you can also enjoy the view of the mountains!
