AUSTRIA | WHAT TO DO IN BEAUTIFUL VIENNA?

We drove an incredible 400km along Austrian roads, and it was a very good experience despite the strong weather we faced on one of the nights, the cold dropped to -6 after we got -21 in the Czech Republic.

VIENNA

The capital of Austria is always ranked as one of the most sophisticated places in Europe. I won't disagree with this statement, as all those breathtaking buildings, cafes and restaurants on every corner give the city a special charm, of course! Not to mention that Vienna breathes music... who doesn't associate classical music, waltzes and opera, even though we only stayed in the city for 2 days, we recommend staying at least 4 to be able to better enjoy the classical performances, we were only able to enjoy the local architecture and cuisine and we were unable to fit in the incredible cultural programs of this capital.

City built on the banks of the Danube River, Vienna, capital of Austria (Wien, in German; Vienna, in English) is also one of the country's nine states. Vienna is the city with the most population in Austria (1.7 million) and the cultural, economic and political center. The quality of life for residents is one of the best in the world. It is even the headquarters of international organizations such as the UN (United Nations) and OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries).

Visit Stephansdom Cathedral or Estevão Cathedral, both the exterior and the interior are super beautiful. The highlight of the cathedral's exterior is its roof, made up of more than 250,000 vitrified tiles.

Glimpse the Karlskirche, a church that was built by Emperor Charles VI when Vienna was free from the plague that was ravaging the city. This church is unique, because it mixes different styles, and even has minarets.

The Vienna Opera House is perhaps the best-known and most cherished symbol of Viennese arts. The original construction, under the orders of Emperor Franz Josef I, took place between 1861 and 1869. But, at that time, its architecture did not please the inhabitants of the city of Vienna. One of the two architects could not handle the criticism and committed suicide. The other would die, weeks later, of a heart attack.

If you are a fan of modern art, you must visit the “Mumok” (Museum of Modern Art).

Try not to go in January like we did, it's very cold! At night it is impossible to walk the streets

TRANSPORT

Vienna is a relatively large capital, with 1.7 million inhabitants and a super efficient and complete public transport network. Regardless of which means of transport you choose (bus, train, tram or metro), you can easily travel to every corner of the city.

From Vienna we went to Graz, from Graz to Slovenia and then to Croatia to complete our backpacking trip

FINAL TIPS

In Austria they speak German. The language is very difficult, especially for those who have never had previous contact with the language.

Austrians are a bit grumpy, especially in Vienna.

Its currency is the EURO. It is bathed by the Danube River and the best time to visit the capital is in summer (May to August).

Visit Austria, but if you go in winter, be prepared for bone-aching cold if you go in January like us.
